Scanning QR Codes

QR codes can be scanned using specific devices with QR code reading programs. This is a consideration that needs to be made prior to committing to a QR coding system. According to Wikipedia (2011), "users with a camera phone equipped with the correct reader application can scan the image of the QR code to display text, contact information, connect to a wireless network, or open a web page in the telephone's browser" (para. 5).

It can be a costly task, if you were to purchase the required gadgets that can read the codes. Some schools have invested in iPod Touch devices or even iPads to remain in classrooms or libraries for student use. Students that own their own devices may be given special permission to bring them to school for reading QR codes.

If you are looking for a more affordable option, there are programs that can be installed desktop computers that may require a webcam to capture the QR code. David Hopkins, a technology blogger, suggests a few of this programs on his blog post, It's Not All About the Phone, You Know.
